About the Easy Digital Downloads Module

WordPress sites using EDD to sell downloadable digital products can now leverage Sitewide Sales to design smarter sale banners, landing pages, and set up discount code behavior. All this along with reports to track conversion rates and sale performance as compared to other revenue in the period.

About the Custom Sale Module

We have also added a “Custom” module that allows you to use Sitewide Sales with any transactional plugin or funnel that has a designated confirmation page. While the custom module won’t include a revenue report, you can still configure a smart sale banner, landing page, and set any page as your “confirmation” page to track the sales funnel conversion rate.

Please update Sitewide Sales from the Plugins page in the WordPress admin. A valid license key is required to update the plugin. You can find your license key on your account page here.

The full list of updates is below:

  • FEATURE: Added Easy Digital Downloads module
  • FEATURE: Added “Custom” module
  • ENHANCEMENT: Start and end times can now be set for Sitewide Sales
  • ENHANCEMENT: Added daily revenue chart to reports
  • ENHANCEMENT: Clicking the discount code link in PMPro reports now shows the orders that have used that code

  • BUG FIX: WooCommerce coupons are no longer being applied on every page
  • BUG FIX: Removed strike price from WC subscriptions as it wasn’t showing consistently
  • BUG FIX: Resolved issue where swsales_show_banner filter would not always fire
  • BUG FIX: Fixed issues where checks for landing/checkout pages failed if no landing or checkout page was set.

If you are running Sitewide Sales on your membership site, you may want to hide your active sale from current customers. In this post, we share the reasons you want to do this and how you achieve it with Paid Memberships Pro.

Banner for post: How can I hide my sale from current customers?

Hiding a sale can help cut down on support requests from existing members who notice the sale and ask to have their fees reduced. In our experience, this doesn’t happen as often as you might expect, and we suggest just lowering those users’ fees if you can afford it. Still, why put yourself in that position if you can avoid it?

Luckily, you can hide a sale from current or existing members with the Sitewide Sales: Paid Memberships Pro module.

When setting up a banner to advertise your sale, there’s an option to “Hide Banner by Membership Level”. By selecting this option, only non-members will see your sale banners and a link to the sale landing page. You can hide the banner for all membership levels or for specific levels only. This is useful if you want to promote a sale on a higher tier paid level to free or lower tier members.

For first time installation of Sitewide Sales, check out this Sitewide Sales documentation on how it works, how to the install plugin, and how to set up your first sale.

As you work through the sale setup, the step related to setting up your sale banner is how you will set the specific membership levels in PMPro to “Hide Banner by Membership Level“.

Years ago, it was common to create different discount codes, landing pages, banners, and emails during the BFCM weekend. Things are changing. But should you use the same discount code for Black Friday and Cyber Monday? In our experience; Yes.

Thoughts on Using the Same Discount Code

People have gotten used to shopping anytime within the BFCM weekend. This makes marketing simpler and allows you to explore using the same discount code, banner and landing page style for both sales.

However, if you have time for it, you can adjust your marketing strategy slightly. For example, in your social media posts and emails (which you should be sending every day – covered in “How often should I email my sale?“), mention the specific sales day. For example Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday.

If you want to run two discount codes, make sure both are working and are available throughout the BFCM weekend. For example, both the “BLACKFRIDAY” and “CYBERMONDAY” codes should work throughout the entire sale period. Otherwise, this would create confusion among your potential customers and will probably lose you some sales.

There are some sites and industries famous for adjusting their sales to be even better on Cyber Monday. One example is the video game store Steam. In fact, they take it to the extreme, with the discounts swinging from 5-90% hour by hour over the holiday weekend. The process at Steam is automated and probably has been fine-tuned for their specific audience. It creates a lot of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) among customers. This isn’t something a small membership site or business would be particularly interested in.

In general, less confusion is better. Use the same discount code on Black Friday and Cyber Monday to make set-up simpler.

Bonus Tip:

The more comfortable you are in running sales, the less effort you’ll put in setting up BFCM sales. You can choose to create reusable content, designs, and layout for the whole weekend. You can use the same emails and social media posts next year with minimal changes.

Email marketing is still a big sales funnel to target your audience. But how often should you email your list about a sale? We found that when you are running a sale, email your mailing list every single day, and twice on the last day. You can make your emails brief and precise. For example, “sale ending tomorrow [link]” “4 hours left [link].”

In this article, we give some guidance on what to consider when deciding how often to remind your audience of a sale.

Banner for post: How often should I email my list about my sale?

Tips on Membership and Physical Products and How Often to Email Your List

When it comes to email frequency, membership products differ from physical products. Once someone buys, they become a customer and are typically moved “off” your sales marketing list. This means that they won’t be targeted again for the same promotion.

With membership products, you need to be aggressive and target as many prospects as possible. If you annoy someone in your membership site sales funnel by sending too many emails, it’s not that big of a problem. The kind of person annoyed by emails ABOUT GETTING YOUR PRODUCT AT A DISCOUNT is not likely to ever become a customer.

A more traditional Ecommerce shop selling multiple physical or digital products may want to be less aggressive with sending emails. With a traditional ecommerce shop, repeat customers are NOT moved off your mailing list. Therefore need to continue to receive your future emails. So it’s possible that sending too many emails might annoy legitimate customers in your mailing list. This being said, we lean towards more emails.

Other Marketing Platforms

Besides Emails, you can try social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. These outlets are flooded with different content types, and you want to regularly re-post or update your sales. Doing so prevents your posts from being pushed to the very bottom where nobody actually interacts with them.  Again, it might feel like you are being too pushy or annoying. But in reality, if you post 20 times over BFCM weekend, your customers may only see one or two of those posts.

Bonus Tip: Avoid paid marketing on social media outlets or search engines during the BFCM weekend. The competition and the high ad rates might not make any sense for a small Ecommerce or membership site business. Instead, leverage the connection you already have. It’s easier to convert people in your sales funnel than complete strangers on the Internet.
